Barbuda travel guide and vacation resources
From the cobbled lanes and historic churches of St John's to discos, resorts and cricket pitches, Antigua and Barbuda are a prime destination in the Leeward Islands. The yachties and daytrippers are as thick as frigate birds, but with 365 beaches you will find many secluded spots. White sand beaches give way to yacht-filled harbours and 18th-century shipyards. Antigua's beaches range from the tranquil waters and deserted sands of Runaway Beach on the northwest coast to the rougher Atlantic surf of Long Bay Beach on the eastern side. On Barbuda, the distinctive sands of Pink Beach stretch unbroken for 13 km and frigate birds cluster on the shores of Codrington Lagoon.Wander the narrow streets of old St John's, and watch the graceful arcs of the windmills at Betty Hope's Plantation, Antigua's first sugar estate. Explore millennia of history encapsulated in the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and the islands' nautical past at Nelson's Dockyard. Go deep into interior villages and rainforests on Fig Tree Drive. Amble up the easy path to the gun emplacements of Shirley Heights, 150 metres above Antigua's southernmost point, for views of the islands and the sea. Push through the thick date palms around the old church in All Saints, in the centre of the island. The islands' finest Georgian building is the mid-19th-century St Peter's Church in Parham Bowl an over or hit a six with a game of cricket. Cycle winding island roads, rarely encountering a real hill. Kiteboard or windsurf at Half Moon Bay on Antigua's east coast. Kayak to hidden coves or ride horseback through sugarcane fields. Fungi and pepperpot (a meat and vegetable stew with cornmeal dumplings) is Antigua's signature dish. Test the flavours of other specialties, ducana (sweet potato dumpling with salt fish), curries, and roti bread. Wash down grilled lobster with a bottle of Wadadli beer. Restaurants on Antigua cluster in St John's, Jolly Harbour and Falmouth and English harbours; on Barbuda, choices are limited mainly to a few places in Codrington. Steel bands lead the rhythm in St John's, yachties flock to English Harbour, and high rollers play the tables in Jolly Harbour. Keep your eye out for cricketing legends in Runaway Bay and movie stars in Shirley Heights.
